10 April 2003: Understanding

I first heard this story on the radio last weekend: U.S. soldiers faced a hostile crowd as their approached a holy mosque.  The people did not understand that the mosque leaders had invited the soldiers.  To defuse the situation, the soldiers knelt in front of the crowd.  I had wanted to see this moment of humanity- and you can see it on CNN.

07 April 2003: Love and Hate

Teen mother wakes up, after year in coma.  "She rolled her eyes for yes when asked if she had been aware of her mother at her bedside."

"There is, in fact, no minimizing the difference between Judaism and Christianity on whether hate can be virtuous.  Indeed, Christianity's founder acknowledged his break with Jewish tradition on this matter from the very outset: 'You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you...'  In disagreeing, Judaism does not deny the importance of imitating God; Jews hate the wicked because they believe that God despises the wicked as well."  From "The Virtue of Hate" in the journal, First Things by Rabbi Meir Y. Soloveichik [seen on artsandlettersdaily.com]

05 April 2003: Modern Sailing Race Disasters
Read two books of the yacht race disaster sort recently.  One was Godforsaken Sea:  The True Story of the Race Through the World's Most Dangerous Waters.  The title is actually a modest description of what its subjects are doing: these are men and women who sail alone without any meaningful contact with the outside world through waves as tall as 5 story buildings.  Only once has the race been completed without at least one fatality.  One Englishman, after risking his life to turn around and sail back into the waves to save a man adrift in a lifeboat.  Only by the best of luck does he actually succeed, offering the man a cup of tea after bringing him aboard.  Later, the lucky Frenchman gives him the bottle of wine he had stowed in his survival suit. These are people different from us.  Here's a BBC web presentation on a woman who completed the race this year.

The other book was The Proving Ground : The Inside Story of the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Race.  This book has quite a few more people in it, people died, there are questions of who, if anyone, is at fault.  So there is a little bit of the sin of voyeurism in reading the book. Nonetheless, it is very interesting, as gossip always is.

02 March 2003: Back to Life!!!

Celiac Disease.  In my case, the intestines churn, the red blood cell count plummets, and I've been sleeping since October. But no more cheating.  I plan on staying awake enough to talk to my friends and write my blog for a long time.

If you want to learn more about Celiac Disease, the best place to go is the Canadian Celiac Association.
