December 27, 2003Moved the blog to blogger. Any photographs that DO NOT contain recognizable people can be copied, so long as "loafingcactus.com" is readable in the photo or "loafingcactus.com" attribution is shown in immediate proximity to the the photo. Some photos show my name and if you use one of those, please also show the "loafingcactus.com." Photos with recognizable people require prior permission. And if you do use one of my photos, it would be nice if you let me know. Any text can be used, so long as attribution is given and a link is made back to the blog. Also, please make sure to respect other copyright holders whose work may appear in this web site. Any exceptions to this open-use policy will be specifically stated at the applicable place. October 13, 2003The "entry" page shows the current week. Added posts are put in throughout the page, where they fit into the structure and narrative. Monday starts a new page (except when I decide to keep multiple weeks on one page!). Up through October 12, 2003I try to keep the "entry" page of the blog to under 30 seconds at 28.8. Each day I post to the entry page and duplicate to the permanent monthly archive page. There are some really great blog services, but I keep my blog myself in "permalink" form using Microsoft Frontpage 2000. Most of the permalinks are bookmarked in two digits (some of the older pages aren't). So for example to link to the July 01, 2003 entry use: http://www.loafingcactus.com/blog/2003/07.htm#01 BeginningsThe blog was started on August 27th, 2002. Purposes included improving my writing, learning the format of blog writing, sharing my thoughts, and trying to develop some community- so write back darn it! |

I looked around at some blogs for ideas- a listing of some of my favorite blogs is here. And also I was motivated by a couple of enthusiastic books. A year before starting the blog I read Design for Community by Derek M. Powazek. The books has spawned a pretty good web site, in addition to the other web sites managed by Powazek. After starting the blog I read We've Got Blog: How Weblogs are Changing Our Culture . Both books oversell what you can do, but go ahead and read them if you are thinking about starting a blog- a blog is a huge commitment and you're going to need all the enthusiastic motivation you can get!
