Where are the cousins in our Hume ancestry?

Here are the ones the I've found so far:

Sir William de Hume (1208 - 1266) - Ada

Ada and Sir William de Hume were first cousins once removed.  William's father, Sir Patrick, was brother of Ada's grandfather, Waldeve, Fifth Earl of Dunbar.

Interestingly, Ada's mother, also known as Ada, brought inherited lands to her husband, Sir Patrick.  This land passed to Ada's first husband.  After he died without issue and Ada married Sir William and thereby Sir William obtained possession of the land.  One story is that it is from the name of this land holding that Sir William takes the name "de Hume." Note that the land therefore passed through three generations of men, from Ada's father to her son-in-law through the relationships of women.

Some have suggested  that the name "Hume" and some other associated names are native language plays which are meant to subversively insult the Britons.

George Hume (1432 - 1497) - Mariota Sinclair (d. 1496)

George Hume, Second Baron of Wedderburn, and Mariota Sinclair are third cousins, once removed.  Mariota Sinclair's mother is Katherine Home.

George Hume/Home (1615 - 3 Sep 1650, killed at the Battle of Dunbar) -- Catherine Morrison (1615 - aft 1695)

This George Hume is the fourth great grandson of the George Hume above.

George Hume and Catherine Morrison were twentieth cousins.  This is because both the Hume line and the Arbothnott line in the ancestry of Ms. Morrison descend from Uhtred, 5th Lord of Bamburgh.

Mr. and Mrs. George Hume are the 9th great grandparents of The Cactus.

Read more about their relationship under How are we related to the ARBUTHNOTT family?

George Hume (1672 - 1720) - Margaret Home (1675 - 13 Apr 1765)

George Hume and Margaret Home are actually cousins several times over.

They are fifth cousins once removed.  They are both descendents of David Hume/Home, the Third Baron of Wedderburn and Isabella Hoppringle.

They are seventh cousins once removed and seventh cousins twice removed because of lines of common descent from James Stewart of Lorn ("The Black Knight) and Joan de Beufort of Scots.  Joen de Beufort was first married to James I, the Stuart King of Scots.  After the King was murdered by his uncle, she married James of Lorn.  He later died at sea.  Mr. and Mrs. James Stewart of Lorn's granddaughter married an Arbuthnott and their great granddaughter was Isabel Arbothnott. Isabel Arbuthnot is also an anscestor of Ms. Morrison motioned above.

They are seventh cousins once removed because common descent from William Sinclair, the Earl of Orkney.  This is another line that goes through Ms. Morrison, above.

They are cousins four times over from Uhtred, 5th Lord of Bamburgh, twice 22nd cousins and twice 21st cousins once removed.

Mr. and Mrs. George Hume are the parents of George Hume III, our first Hume in America and the Cactus's 6th great grandfather.

LeRoy Farnham Krusi (1894 - 1983) and Harriet Hume (1907 - 1997)

This is by far the most interesting case.  Records I currently hold suggest that LeRoy Farnham Krusi and Harriet Hume are cousins several times over (from 31st twice removed to 33rd cousins) based on their common descent from Edward the Elder and Aelfrede.

The several times are the result of the intercrossing ancestry of the Hume family line.  Here is the main trunk of the Hume connection:

Edward the Elder - Aelfede

     |

Edgar, King of England

     |

King Ethelred "The Unready" II

     |

a daughter of King Ethelred known as Elgiva or Aelfigu or Eldgiva

     |

Aldgatha (Algatha)

     |

Cospatrick, Baron of Dunbar and Earl of Northumberland

     |

Cospatrick II, Earl of Dunbar

     |

Cospatrick III (who died in Egypt while on Crusade)

     |

Cospatrick IV

     |

Sir Patrick, Fifth Earl of Dunbar

     |

Ada - William de Hume

     |

William de Hume II

King Edgar's sister, Edvina, was sent to Germany to marry Karl III, King of the Franks.  In Germanic genealogies she is known as "Edvina von England".  Their descendents include the Werdenberg-Sargans and Hosensax families, ancestors of the Tschudi family of Switzerland.  The Tschudi family are ancestors of Catherine Eggar, who married Hermann Krusi.  They are  LeRoy Farnham Krusi's great grandparents.

Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Farham Krusi are grandparents of the Cactus.
