In 1856 he went to California with two brothers and founded the canning company of Hapgood, Hume & Company on the Sacramento River. Fishing was disappointing and the next year he opened the first cannery on the Columbia River, which was more successful. The cannery business continued to be successful and the brothers exported most of their product to Australia. Charles Edwin Hume was born 28 April 1879 in Maine. In 1904 he married Eleanor Carlisle Eckart of San Francisco. Her mother, Harriet Gorham, was a descendant of John Gorham and his wife, Desire Howland whose parents had been on the Mayflower. Her paternal grandmother, Eleanor Carlisle, was a descendent of John Carlisle, the founding Trustee of Alexandria, Virginia, and of Governor Fairfax of the Bahamas and Chief Justice Walker of the Bahamas. Charles Edwin Hume died in Alameda County, California on 10 November 1941. Harriet Hume was born 23 November 1907 in Piedmont, California. On 20 November 1931 she married the divorced LeRoy Farnam Krusi. She died in Piedmont, California on 03 April 1997. |
