Johanna CLAWITER1, 2

Born 1856 in California to Mary Gading and Edward Clawiter.Married Herman WILHELMI on 30 November 1876 in Alameda, Alameda County, California.2  Died 04 September 1901 or 1902 without any immediate family in Alameda, California.1

It is unclear what the course of Johanna's life was.  One possibility from the data at hand is that she moved to Iowa and had a child named Oscar.  Perhaps then there was a falling out with her husband and she moved back to California alone?  At the end of her life she was a successful business women, alone in California.  Further research on this issue is needed.

"DEATH APPROCHED WITHOUT A WARNING

---

Mrs. Johanna Wilhelmi Passes Away Suddenly.

---

Found Lifeless in Bed This Morning.

---

Had Been Ailing Slightly For Several Days But Condition Was Not Alarming.

---

Mrs. Johanna Wilhelmi, who for several years has been engaged in the coal business on Park street, was found dead this morning at her home, 1128 College avenue, by George W. Craig, one of her neighbors.

Deceased had been complaining since last Saturday, and while she suffered considerable pain she did not think that her illness was of a serious nature. She was somewhat better Tuesday and went to San Francisco to visit friends. When she returned yesterday she was in a very feeble condition and was suffering great agony.

Miss Annie Taylor, a bookkepper at the coal yard, accompanied her home and applied some simple remedies which apparently gave the woman relief.

Toward the evening she requested Miss Taylor to remain with her during the night. She told the young woman that she was feeling much better and hoped to get a refreshing sleep. When she retired she locked her bedroom door, stating that she did not wish to be disturbed during the night.

When Miss Taylor rapped on her door this morning there was no response, but she presumed that Mrs. Wilhelmi was sleeping and made no extra effort to awaken her. As time wore on and she heard no noise from the bedroom she became alarmed and rapped rather loudly on the door. When this brought no response she summoned assistance.

Mr. Craig responded. He was unable to force the door of the bedroom and so secured a ladder and climbed to the window, which was partially opened. Mrs. Wilhelmi was in bed apparently sleeping, but a closer examination demonstrated that she had been dead for several hours.

Deputy Coroner Fowler was notified and the remains were removed to the local morgue, where an autopsy was held.

Deceased was a native of Mt. Eden, in this county, and was 45 years of age. She was the daughter of Mrs. Mary Clawiter of 2037 Central avenue, and sister of Mrs. H. Krusi, Mrs. Mary Parkhurst and Edward Clawiter. She was a prominent member of the German Ladies' Aid Society and was one of the officers of that organization.

The autopsy, which was performed this morning by Dr. C.L. Tisdale, developed the fact that death was due to a blood clot in the right ventricle."
